OPERATION RODENTIA



Armed to teeth, I cautiously opened the kitchen door and stealthy crept inside the kitchen.Decisive victory was imminent.I tactically pinned the "enemy" against the wall with precision and dealt him a fatal blow; neutralizing him on the spot.

Early in the morning, on Saturday last week, my Spouse - who is the chairperson of the department of food and nutrition in our house got into the kitchen to collect some snacks. Upon opening the kitchen door, she realized that there was movement within some utensils which were placed on the second tier of the kitchen table. She reported the matter to me and as the chairperson of the security in our house, I swiftly moved into action to establish the source. Upon reviewing the "intelligence reports", I discovered that the "CCTV camera" had captured an "intruder" few weeks ago, roaming along the wall between the kitchen and the living room. The "suspect"  was described as a 'Rodentia', of the class 'Mammalia' and Kingdom 'Animalia'. We could not easily identify whether he was 'Rattus rattus' or 'Rattus norvegicus' and his motive was not immediately established, however, we couldn't rule out "espionage".

I did a 'reconnaissance' within the kitchen area and concluded that there was need to carry out a mission to flush out the "spy" - Operation Rodentia was born. The first step was to seal all the possible exit points which  the "enemy" could have used  to escape.

It took only few minutes for the "enemy" to be neutralized. The fallen "intruder"  was identified as 'Rattus rattus', a close relative of 'Rattus norvegicus'. Intelligence reports confirmed that he may have gained entry through the main door, and established residence within the kitchen area. It was further reported that he posed a threat to the "food security". Operation Rodentia was a success.

Great expertise, proper planing and execution played a major role in  the success of the mission.

THE LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL.

The events of  that day of October are still very fresh  in my mind like   the first beam of light  glittering on a sail -  despite the fact that they happened exactly a decade ago. When I realized I had to sit for the exams in a sickly condition, e motions flashed across my  face like the sweep of sun-rent clouds over a quiet landscape. WHAT GOES AROUND?...

 About 40 years ago, a motorist got stuck on one of our muddy village roads. He requested a group of men who were nearby to help him, but they refused. One of the men was my Grandpa. The motorist turned to a group of boys who were playing nearby for assistance. The boys helped him. One of the boys was my Uncle (the son of my Grandpa, who together with other men refused to help the motorist).  Later that day, my Uncle (a small boy by then - probably a class three pupil) was bitten by a Snake on his leg. Efforts were made to get means of transport, to rush him to the Hospital for treatment. The motorist who got stuck earlier on our village road was on his way back, when he was stopped by my terrified Grandpa asking for assistance. The motorist recognised my Grandpa as one of the men who refused to help him earlier in the day - but he also recognised my Uncle as one of the boys who helped him.
